“Your cat has feline diabetes.” If this is your vet’s message after examining your beloved friend, it will come as a shock. Yes, your cat has a serious disease. But you can treat it!
I got the message myself early 2003. My (then) 10-year-old neutered cat Duvelke had been urinating and drinking more than usual for a few weeks. First it was thought to be connected with a previous medication. But after urine and blood tests the veterinarian was certain. “Your cat has feline diabetes.”
Now what is diabetes?
Blood contains sugar (glucose). The blood sugar level is controlled by the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas. If this organ produces not enough insulin, we speak of diabetes.
Symptoms of feline diabetes differ. Duvelke started to pass more urine than usual, and had an increased thirst as a result of this. Other possible symptoms are weight loss, decreased appetite, lethargy and a poor coat condition.
Cats with untreated diabetes will become inactive, vomit regularly, stop urinating and fall into a coma. But if you treat feline diabetes correctly, your cat might still be able to lead a long and happy life. It does take effort and dedication, though.
Your cat will need to get food at set times, and preferably should stay indoors.
And - this is essential - you will have to give your cat insulin shots. Once a day, often two times daily. Your vet will determine the quantity and tell you how to do it. It is not scary!
But keep an eye on your friend. Your cat should have had food before getting the insulin shot! If not, a hypoglycemic shock (a ‘hypo’) may occur. This is also possible if your cat gets too much insulin. And this is really dangerous. If you are not there to help, your cat might die from a hypo.
Duvelke has had a few hypos since 2003. He survived. How? By putting glucose in his mouth, on the inside of his cheeks. Honey on his tongue also worked well.
Duvelke’s quantity of insulin has been reduced considerably the past year. And he’s doing really fine. If you didn’t know about his disease, you would assume he is a perfectly healthy cat.
So, with a proper treatment, diabetic cats can still lead a happy life!

Today the term Business Analyst is synonymous with a career in the IT industry but the most successful and valuable analysts are those who understand the “business” rather than those who understand IT.
So what exactly is a Business Analyst? What is the Business Analyst’s role? What is the best background for this job? What skill set is required? What type of person is the best fit? What training is required and available? Each organisation seems to have its own ideas about the role, skills, responsibilities and expectations. Given the importance of the job, a common definition would assist both practitioners and employers. In this first part we look at just what a Business Analyst is and explore the evolution of the Business Analyst’s role.
The modern Business Analyst - a definition
First we need to clarify our terminology. One of the most commonly accepted definitions of a Business Analyst(B.A.) is that of communicator. The B.A. is the link between the requirements (the client) and the software solution (the development team).
The skills required by the B.A. are much more than just good inter-personal communication skills - a range of tools and techniques are needed, as well as an appropriate background and personality. Whilst the modern B.A. performs a highly critical role in software development, the real skills needed for success are not technology centric. It’s worth reviewing the evolution of the B.A. to understand how we arrived at this.
Evolution of the Business Analyst
In the early days of commercial computing all of the investigation, design and development work for a software application was performed by the computing specialists, who often had little knowledge of the business they worked in.
During the nineties it became common for staff from the business user community to become more closely involved in computer systems development. This move was designed to ensure that computer-based systems were targeted at the real business issues. The title Business Analyst (B.A.) became common, although there was no commonly-adopted role definition. The staff filling this role knew about the business - or the part of it that they worked in - but they knew little about IT and their analysis skills were often very limited.
Today, the business process analysis, the requirements specification and the outline design - plus much of the acceptance testing and systems implementation work - is performed by the B.A.
The B.A. requires a range of analysis and creativity skills, data and process modelling skills, together with requirements interpretation and specification-writing skills. They also need interpersonal skills for interviewing and for leading workshops to find out what the clients really want and need. B.A.’s also have to ’sell’ the solution to decision-makers and development teams whilst negotiating and compromising on the three crucial elements of speed, cost and quality. To quote Arthur C. Clarke - “Do you want it quick, cheap or good? I can give you any two.”
On top of this, B.A.’s will often be working in teams - they may need team leadership skills and many are required to take on a project management role. In short the modern B.A. needs a range of ‘hard’ skills - data and process modelling, design, specification writing - and a range of ’soft’ skills - analysis, creativity, interviewing, presentation, negotiation - to perform effectively.
Surveys have constantly reported that more than 50% of large software projects are over-budget or behind schedule. As recently as October 2002, the Australian Financial Review reported on a Sydney organisation which had halted work on a customer billing system due to cost blow-outs and missed deadlines. More than $70 million had been spent, with only two out of 21 elements of the system delivered. With inadequate, inappropriate or inaccurate requirements as a major contributor to project overruns and failure, the role of a skilled Business Analyst in a project team is more critical than ever.

Have you ever wasted money on a gym membership or piece of home exercise equipment? YES?
After this you will never do so again!
Every year thousands of people join the gym in with the aim of shedding those extra pounds. This is especially true of January. I know, as I have for the last month had to fight to get a space on the cross trainer (the only time in the year I have to). Then how many of those only last at the gym a month or two (or even less) before they stop going to the gym? And how many of those leave their gym membership running? I know I have been guilty of this in the past. I have left it running while battling with the guilt of both not going to the gym to get fit AND watching £40 go down the drain each and every month. But good intentions never acted on kept that money trickling away until I came to my senses.
The same is true of gym equipment. Have you had a bit of gym equipment, for example and excercise bike, where the most exercise you got from it was shifting it into the back of your car (after it had gathered a layer of dust in some forgotten corner of your house). Where did you take it in the car? Down to the second hand shop for sale.
YOU’LL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!!! Why?
Here is why?
If I was to take the £40 that was about to go out of my account today (on unused gym membership) and invest it.
If I was to achieve an annual return of 20% a year every year that I invest it (”Yeah right. 20%? You have to be kidding!” I hear you say! — but bear with me and check the link below).
And if I was to invest it for the next 56 years (till my 92nd birthday), and never withdraw any of the money, do you know how much that £40 would be worth?
It would be worth a staggering £1,086,950!!! That’s right, a cool one MILLION!
If you don’t believe me, get you calculator out and try it: 1.2 x 40 then hit the = sign 56 times. What do you get?
Now look at your unused gym membership in these terms. If you don’t use it, you are losing £1 million each and every month. I bet you’ll either use or cancel that membership now.
Now if you bought a treadmill for the home, that cost you £200, do you know how long it would take to be worth £1 million if invested as above? 47 YEARS. That’s by my 83rd birthday. And do you know how much it would be worth if I invested it till my 92nd birthday? It would be worth a staggering £5.5 million. YES FIVE AND A HALF MILLION POUNDS.
View those gym memberships and exercise machine costs in this light, can you afford not to use your membership or machine?

Find buyers searching for what you sell with Adwords, Google says.
Yahoo Search Marketing asks, Instead of looking for customers, what if they found you?
In the past few years, businesses of all sizes have rushed to capitalize on the benefits of paid search. The advantages are well known…low start-up costs, shorter lead times, opportunity for global reach or local targeting, and more accurate campaign tracking.
The potential benefits are clearly compelling, but what’s less obvious is how to create consistently effective paid search campaigns. Smaller and medium-sized businesses have found that do-it-yourself paid search can be difficult and time-consuming. Larger businesses that outsource have learned to be wary of search-marketing scoundrels who are better at promoting their own business than promoting yours.
That said, there’s a growing body of research and best practices for success in paid search marketing, and you shouldn’t miss out because you don’t have an extensive knowledge of the of the online channel. Many of today’s most successful search marketing campaigns developed over months, not years. With that in mind here’s a brief checklist to keep paid search advertising pointed in a profitable direction. Make sure it’s:
Action- oriented: Clearly, your primary goal is to have prospects click your ad for more information, so it’s OK to be direct. Don’t make people think too much. Include a clear call to action like “click here” or “learn more” for better results.
- Attention-getting: Your online ad has only a split second to gain attention. Use attention-getting headlines and bold images to make your ad stand out. If you use Google Adwords, you’ll have the ability to test and improve your copy with as many as three versions of your ad.
- Brief. The most effective online ads contain a simple, easy to understand message. Keep your ads short and to the point. Use simple, high-impact words. The place to provide additional information is on your landing page or website, not a text or banner ad.
- Offer-oriented: To drive site traffic, specific offers work better than general invitations. Offering a discount, time-sensitive offer or something that’s FREE are time-tested techniques. For example, free shipping or discounts for first-time customers can drive click-thrus.
- Customer-focused: In getting your message across, it’s easy to forget that customers are scanning your ad to learn how they can benefit, not to learn how great your company is. Clearly explain how your product or service solves problems, makes things easier or improves profits.
- Professional: If your ad includes graphics, use a professional designer to select appropriate colors and fonts to gain attention and ensure your ad is readable. Use only high-resolution, professional images in your online ad. Quality design suggests a quality company.
- Relevant: Do visitors arrive at your ad by typing in a search term? If so, try repeating the term in your ad. For example, if you want to attract visitors using the search phrase Aircraft Charters, make sure Aircraft Charters is prominently displayed in your ad - you’ll get higher click-thrus.
- Going somewhere: The ad is only part of the equation that converts visitors to buyers. Make sure your ad clicks through to a page that’s relevant to your offer. If your ad offers a 10 percent discount, make it clear how visitors can get the discount instead of making them figure out what to do next. Landing pages pick up where the ad leaves off, providing specific information and next steps. Targeted landing pages generally outperform home pages when it comes to converting visitors to subscribers or buyers.
- Tested. You may have heard the quip that “All opinions are useless, including this one.” The same might be said about search marketing advice. Don’t take opinions and second-hand research to heart. Learn and use the analysis tools included in your paid search account. It may be that Google skews male or Yahoo is better for consumer marketing than B2B, but you’ll never know until you test. You may even check out MIVA.com, a smaller search player that’s making a play for the #3 slot behind the big guys. Try out the conversion-tracking tools that are included in your account.
It may take a little homework on your part, but there’s no substitute for knowing which search terms are effective, what visitors are searching for, and what each click and conversion costs. The information is worthwhile not only for search marketing, but the lessons learned can then be applied to other marketing channels and campaigns.

The Gellert Hotel Spa is renowned as the ultimate spa destination in Hungary. Here’s a first hand account of the Gellert experience.
Gellert Hotel Spa
While in Budapest, everyone kept saying I hadn’t experience Hungary until I had a spa. According to my newfound friends, “a spa” meant the Gellert Hotel Spa.
Being a macho American male, I dragged an American girl I met on the train with me to the spa. The purported purpose, of course, was chivalry and introducing her to an experience she would never forget. After paying $2 each, my bluff was called. Women and men were separated for the treatments. I was alone and didn’t speak a word of the language!
Once separated, I was sent into a large room with what appeared to be a few hundred dressing rooms. An attendant looked up from a desk, said something in Hungarian, slapped a piece of cloth in my hand and pointed to a dressing room.
In the dressing room, I prepared to change only to realize the cloth was no more than a string and a 2 x 2 inch square of cotton. For those anatomically challenged, the string went around your waste and the cloth hung in front. At this point, there was only one thing to do. Chant the traveler mantra, “Ah, what the heck. I’ll never see any of these people again.”
Outside the dressing room, I proceeded to immediately stand around, try to look casual and see what the locals were doing. This was a bit difficult as I was the only person in the room. Eventually a local showed up, changed and headed down a hall. I followed and hoped he didn’t notice.
At the end of the hall, we walked through two giant pools. The walls were painted in baroque styles, the steps into the pools were marble and the whole place was impressive. I nearly let my loincloth slide up.
After the pools, we approached a room that looked remarkably more industrial. There was a line out the door and I dutifully joined it behind my guide. After a few moments, we rounded the door and I saw something I did not expect. Eight loincloth clad men like myself were lying on metal tables. Large male masseuses were standing over them. They would slap them about, spray them with garden hoses, slap them about and repeat as necessary. This wasn’t the massage I was anticipating, but I sure as heck wasn’t getting out of line. That would be to embarrassing!
After a few moments, it was my turn to jump up on a table. My “masseuse” looked at me and said, “Americanski?” I nodded. He grinned. And the beating began. A Hungarian/Turkish massage reminded me of the movie “Rocky.” In Rocky, the lead character pounds on sides of meat to get ready for his fight. In the case of the massage, I was the side of meat. It didn’t hurt, but it wasn’t exactly relaxing.
After a few moments of tenderizing, I was lifted off the table and sent flying through the air. As time slowly passed, I noted this hadn’t happened to any of the men who went before me. I also noted the limestone and marble material used in the walls. Just as I started panicking, I splashed down into a pool to the sound of laughter. While I was trying to decide if I should laugh or be enraged, my body started sending its own signals. I was in a pool of what had to be the coldest water on the planet earth. I am talking Antarctica kind of cold.
Leaping out of the pool, the men in the room gave me a standing ovation accompanied by hunched over, gasping laughter. Now I knew Hungary.
Well, when in Rome…err, Budapest.

When traveling to the Magic Kingdom with children, it is important to perform advanced planning before arriving in Florida. Preparing for this trip will make the difference in a stressful family vacation and a fabulous, magical vacation that your family will always remember.
The Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World in Florida is one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations. Millions of visitors tour the Magic Kingdom Park each year and although it is the smallest of all four Disney Florida Parks, it is also the most crowded. It is not uncommon to see families touring the parks in the hot Florida sun, with parents yelling at their children and the children crying or screaming for something. This tends to happen as families spend a lot of money on this type of vacation and want to be sure to “get their moneys worth”. This leads them to drag their families throughout the park, with over-tired, hot and hungry children. It is important to remember that children function best when in their normal daily routine. Their days at Walt Disney World will be filled with early mornings, off schedule (or skipped) naps, changes in eating times, and late nights. Also the weather in Orlando can be extremely hot and humid or very rainy, depending on when you visit. It is crucial that parents understand that children will be on sensory overload and will be out of their routines when on vacation.
You can visit the Magic Kingdom with children and still have a fabulous time. If you are only able to visit for one day, you should arrive at the parks before its scheduled opening time. As the park opens you should visit Fantasyland (if traveling with small children) or Frontierland (for older children). A one day touring schedule is possible, however, if traveling with children you will have to be willing to limit your list of “must-see” attractions. With children, it is always better to allot two full days at the Magic Kingdom. This will allow you to tour at a calmer pace and allow your children to take in all that the park has to offer.
Your advanced planning when visiting the Magic Kingdom should include deciding what time of year to visit, what day of the week will be least crowded, and how many days you have to visit the Magic Kingdom. You should also review the park layout and policies before you arrive. Being knowledgeable on the attractions will help you decide which ones you would like to visit before even arriving in Orlando. Reviewing Disney information on stroller rentals, the Fastpass system and parades and shows are just a few examples of things you should strive to learn about before you arrive. This will allow you to maximize your time at the Magic Kingdom and concentrate on your Disney family vacation.
A little planning will help you create your best visit to the Magic Kingdom!

And that answer is both “yes” and “no”…. maybe !
Undoubtedly, not everyone wants to drive on vacation, and for those that fall into
this category, there are of course taxi cabs available, as well as limited bus services
to get you around. However, although it can be done, the bus / taxi combo is not in
any way the most cost effective or convenient way to travel.
Of course, if you are just visiting Florida to soak up the sunshine from the pool deck
of your rented luxury villa, then you may be content to forgo the car and just utilise
taxi cabs for the odd time that you do venture away from your vacation home.
However, there is such a vast world of excitement out there, that to do so would
surely be selling yourself short.
And whilst Disney does provide free park to park transport once you are on Disney
property, getting there initially can be a time consuming and often expensive
experience.
So, to my mind, if you want the convenience of being able to go where you want,
when you want, there is no better way to achieve this than by renting a car for the
duration of your vacation. Amazingly, with the incredible all inclusive and fully
insured rates that a select few on line car hire companies provide, I feel sure that
you will be pleasantly surprised how economical it is to have the freedom and luxury
that you really deserve.
However, a word of warning is advisable at this point, as not all car rental deals are
as clear cut as they first appear. Many travel agents or charter airline companies, will
offer you a “free” rental car as an incentive to get you to book with them. In reality,
these “fly drive” deals as they are commonly known, can often work out many times
more expensive than if you had booked the car hire and flights separately, as they
often involve many hidden extras and required insurances to be paid when you pick
up your car at your arrival airport.
Of course by that stage, you are thousands of miles away from home, and literally
stuck between a rock and a hard place. As a result, you have no option but to pay
the hefty extra fees, and very quickly, the “free” car rental doesn’t seem such a good
deal anymore.
I would therefore always advise that you do a little research and check on line which
car rental companies offer a guarantee of fully inclusive, fully insured prices, and
also allow you the opportunity to select the size and class of vehicle that is best
suited to your travelling party. You will be amazed at how much money you can save
by cutting out the middle man and making a simple on line reservation.
So, in conclusion, I would reiterate that whilst it is possible to “do” Florida without a
car, the benefits of renting one far outweigh the other options available. After all,
for most folks, a trip to Florida is a long anticipated vacation of a lifetime, and once
you discover how much there is to experience and enjoy, you’ll be glad that you
took my advice.

Fruit trees can be divided broadly into two categories; citrus
and deciduous. Once, every household grew several fruit trees,
but now suburban blocks are much smaller and so space is
limited. Citrus trees don’t take up much room and are fairly
hardy. They will grow in a variety of soils, but don’t like wet
feet, so if you have clay soil you might have to build it up to
encourage the moisture to drain away. Citrus Forum
Lemons, oranges, grapefruit, mandarin and kumquats all make
delicious marmalades and are packed full of vitamins when eaten
fresh. They last on the tree for ages too, so there is no
problem with storage. Kumquats can be grown in a large container
and though the fruit is too bitter to eat fresh, makes great
marmalade.
The main pests to attack citrus are aphids and shield beetles.
If you notice a black coating like soot growing on the leaves of
your citrus, it is sure to be caused by aphids. They exude a
sticky substance that is favorable to the growth of sooty mold.
Spray the tree with white oil and the problem should clear up.
Shield beetles can be identified by their pungent odor. They are
large beetles and can be green, brown or red with black
markings, depending on the stage of their life cycle. They will
eat all the young leaves, severely retarding the growth and
fruiting of the tree, so spray as soon as you notice them. Be
careful not to get too close, as they tend to squirt an acid
stream that can cause painful injury, when disturbed. Rogor or
Lebaycid are two systemic sprays for these pests.
Deciduous fruit trees are the apple, pear, and stone fruits.
Because they are dormant in the winter, they can be grown in
areas of severe frosts, though a late frost could damage the
blossom. All have glorious blossom and the leaves of many turn
yellow, orange or scarlet in the fall. With the addition of
fresh fruit, what more could you want in a tree?
The fruit will encourage birds to your garden too, and you might
have to share the fruit with them. Otherwise, light netting is
available by the roll. Four iron stakes joined over the top with
poly-pipe makes a good support for the netting.
Fruit flies are the main pest to attack stone fruits like
peaches, plums, apricots and nectarines. There are different
ways of controlling this pest, the two main ones being to spray
the fruit regularly with Rogor or Lebaycid, or hang fruit fly
baits in the tree. These attract and kill the male fly, so there
are no grubs to burrow into the fruit and spoil it.
Apples and pears are attacked by the codling moth, which lays
its eggs just under the skin of the immature fruit. When the
grubs hatch they eat their way through the fruit leaving a brown
tunnel. Carbaryl, Malathion or Lebaycid are the sprays to use
for codling moth.
If you would love a fruit tree, but are short on space, dwarf
apples are available in some areas. They only have one or two
short stems, but are covered in normal size fruit.
